Oriental mask of Chinese theater, which was used in theatrical performances by monstrous characters and grotesque-looking bamboo puppets. It is made of ceramic of different colors and its sullen appearance is softened by the universal symbol constituted by the Yin, or passive principle, and by the Yang, or active principle, which make the mask particularly suggestive. The most primitive forms of culture, such as the ancient Chinese civilization, used masks as decorative and artistic objects, but considered them at the same time charged with emblematic meaning.
